While everybody is talking about artificial intelligence (AI), we want to highlight a good post describing the intelligence amplification (IA) concept. Intelligence amplification relates to all those technologies supplementing human intelligence and improving it. It includes artificial intelligence, along with augmented and virtual reality, 3D printed objects and many others.
There are some interesting definitions / explanations around:
- Intelligence amplification, also referred to as cognitive augmentation and machine augmented intelligence, refers to the effective use of information technology in augmenting human intelligence. The idea was first proposed in the 1950s and 1960s by cybernetics and early computer pioneers. Wikipedia.
- The real objective of IA is to create super-Einsteins, persons qualitatively smarter than any human being that has ever lived. There will be a number of steps on the way there. Michael Anissimov.
- By “augmenting human intellect” we mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems. Increased capability in this respect is taken to mean a mixture of the following: more-rapid comprehension, better comprehension, the possibility of gaining a useful degree of comprehension in a situation that previously was too complex, speedier solutions, better solutions, and the possibility of finding solutions to problems that before seemed insoluble. Douglas Engelbart.
- Why intelligence amplification? To increase the amount of future decisions that are made by enhanced decision-makers. Stephen Frey.

It’s my view that intelligence amplification is a step toward a real artificial intelligence. The correct concept explained by the post is that IA is based upon the current human brain and available resources, while AI tries to build a new brain or neural network from scratch, and this just reinforces the idea that one is simply preliminar to the other. Human beings have always tried to amplify their capabilities. Writing, language, meditative techniques are just a few examples among many. The idea here is that radically extending the abilities of a pre-existing human mind can result in something quite similar to how we envision advanced AI. But with less effort.
